Geneseo Historical Museum Homepage

Geneseoans have had a dedicated interest in preserving Geneseo's history since March 1972 when the museum was first established. After being housed for 25 years in rental property, the Geneseo Historical Association purchased a home of its own November 1, 1996 and opened to the public June, 1998.

The Geneseo Historical Museum, Geneseo, IL, is accepting applications for a Curator/Director position. 

Job Title:        Curator/Director of Geneseo Historical Museum, Geneseo, IL
Reports to:     Geneseo Historical Board

Overview:       Geneseo has had a historical museum since 1972 and has been in its present location – a beautiful 19th century Italianate house (see website’s picture) since Nov. 1, 1996.  In Oct. 2010 The Stees & Keppy Education Room was added to the house.  A new Coach House was built on adjacent property and officially opened Oct. 2013.

Job Duties:
            Create and implement a vision and strategic plan for the future of the museum
            Increase visibility and encourage increased use of the museum
            Install exhibits & exhibitions for special occasions
            Develop online publications for the website

            Manage the annual budget, collection accession, and museum personnel                                                      (student workers and/or interns)
            Continue the process of digitizing the collection and ensuring accuracy of searchable                                 database
            Secure grant funding
            Other duties as assigned

Skills & Experience:
            A college degree in museum science or related field is required
            Ability to develop and articulate a clear vision for the museum and possess significant                               planning and implementation skills
            Demonstrate excellent communication and collaboration abilities of all ages
            Demonstrate success in fundraising and grant writing
            Experience and/or interest in Geneseo history

Special Requirements: 
            This position requires some evening and weekend work and limited travel.
